Danish GRO breaks taboo with an infectious lo-fi song about suicide
GRO is a new name on the Danish scene. Her uncompromising avant-garde pop and technically superior concerts have already generated attention and acclaim in her home country. On May 28, she releases her second single In The Woods.
With soft synthesizers, piano and ukulele this song has a warm and laid-back feeling. Julie's vocal is chill and soulful, although the autotune acts as an otherworldly breath of fresh air on certain passages.
But behind the warm production, there is a dark and very personal story. The lyrics are about a walk Julie went for with her mother in the forest shortly before the mothers’ suicide. A life changing event for Julie.
"She was happy that day, even though she and the whole family suffered because of her severe illness, which seemed without end. Now, a few years after this happened, I’m feeling a need to process the experience through my music. Statistically, two people kill themselves every day in Denmark and leave the ones close to them with a traumatic experience. It is a serious societal issue, but very few people talk about suicide or how to prevent it ”Julie explains.
In 2019/2020, Julie isolated herself for periods of time in her homestudio in Copenhagen with photos and LPs from her parents' youth, giving herself time and space to process. Fade In Time and In The Woods were written during these periods and both songs are from a debut album, which will be released on October 29.
lyrics
Lost my head when I was walking with you
Carved our names when I was walking with you
In the woods
Lost my head when I was walking with you
But it wouldn’t have worked if we kept on from then
In the woods
We were lost
In the woods
We were lost in us
In the woods
